Oakden, Vikings claim gold medal

Posted:

Hunter Oakden shot an 8-under 64 to win the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association boys’ provincial golf title at Oak Island Resort on Friday.

The Vincent Massey sophomore also gave his Vikings the eight-shot cushion they needed to claim the team title over St. Paul’s High School.

Massey’s Daylan Duncalfe shot 75, with Kale Jones carding 78 for a total of 1-over 217 while St. Paul’s finished at 225.

It’s the first Vikings golf banner since Hunter’s father, Dean, led the program to three consecutive championships from 1990 to 1992.

Jewel Lafleche led Jeanne-Sauve to the girls’ crown with an 86 to win the individual event by two.

Hunter Oakden also had the top score in Massey’s qualifying as 40 boys tried out for four spots. Oakden shot a 7-under 64 at Wheat City Golf Course to reach the zone championship. A day later, he shot 70 at Wheat City to beat Jones by one. Duncalfe fired 73, with Cole Lobreau shooting 74 to round out the squad.

At provincials, the top three of a team’s four scores count. However, Lobreau didn’t participate, leaving the Vikings without the buffer other teams had.
