Payworks Coaches of the Month – Riley Kemp and Ryan Penner
Riley Kemp, of Cartwright Collegiate, and Ryan Penner of Lord Selkirk Regional have been selected as Payworks high school Coaches of the month for November.
Riley is a high school math and science teacher, and girls volleyball coach at Cartwright school.
He coached his varsity girls volleyball team to an undefeated record in zone play, and the girls also won a tournament and placed 2nd in another. The girls recently won the title of zone 6 volleyball champions and won the banner for the provincial qualifier. They advanced to the semi-finals of the Provincial “A” Volleyball championships and lost out to the eventual champs, Elton Sabres. The girls were ranked as high as 4th in the province. The amount of success this team has had this season is unbelievable, considering the Cartwright/Baldur co-op total high school population is 67 students.
Riley also coaches cross country, baseball and track and field.
Ryan’s Selkirk Royals Junior Varsity Boys volleyball team captured the 2015 Provincial Championship.
Ryan has been coaching for 10 years at a variety of levels, from assistant coach of the U of M’s women’s volleyball team, to the head coach of the Selkirk Royals JV Boys volleyball team, to his duties as an elementary physical education teacher at St. Andrews School in the Lord Selkirk School Division
Ryan has given up countless hours coaching the sports of volleyball and basketball at Lord Selkirk Regional to continue a tradition of excellence that he experienced himself as an athlete. This is his second provincial championship in three years as head coach of the Royals Junior Varsity Boys. He brings a high level of energy to his coaching and displays an advanced technical and strategic grasp of the game. His team has performed well all season, winning numerous tournaments and triumphing in the KPAC Championships to advance to the Provincial play-offs.
