TRURO, N.S. – Spurred on by thunderous fan support, the Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars staged a dramatic comeback Saturday to claim their second straight NSSAF Division 1 Boys Provincial Volleyball Championship.

It was almost a clean sweep for the Cougars, with the girls reaching the final, as well, only to bow to defending champion Citadel in two straight games.

The Cougars breezed to the boys final, posting three wins in as many pool games before defeating West Kings in a semi final matchup to punch their ticket to the final against Citadel.

The Phoenix were strong contenders and went point for point with CEC, emerging victorious in the first game, 25-22, marking the only game the Cougars lost all tournament.

The second was equally close, with neither team able to build up a lead of more than a few points. Coming down to the wire, CEC prevailed 25-23 setting the stage for a third and deciding game.

Bolstered by their emotional second game win and a loud partisan home crowd, the Cougars took control early and never let up taking the third game 15-10 and capturing the championship.

In pool play, CEC posted victories over Horton (25-19, 25-9), Sir John A. Macdonald (25-11, 25-14) and Sackville (25-6, 25-12). From there, they faced West Kings for the right to advance and came out ahead 25-22, 25-10.

On the Division 1 girls’ side, CEC came up against a tough Citadel squad that made it a three-peat on the weekend, after posting championship wins in 2014 and 2015, as well.

The Cougars trailed throughout much of the first game of the championship, losing 25-10 but came back in the second game, to take it right down to the wire before bowing 25-23.
