SLEMON PARK, P.E.I. — The youthful Charlottetown Rural Raiders have capped another undefeated in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) Senior AAA Girls Softball League.

The Raiders, who have not lost a game since the 2019 semifinals, won their fourth straight provincial title with a 15-0 win over the Morell Marlins in the gold-medal game in Slemon Park on June 5.

“It’s definitely incredible and is definitely a huge accomplishment for our school.” – Rebekah McGeoghegan

“It’s definitely incredible and is definitely a huge accomplishment for our school,” said Rebekah McGeoghegan, the Raiders’ player of the game in the final.

After the 2020 season was cancelled because of COVID-19, the Raiders began their current reign as PEISAA champions in 2021. McGeoghegan, who will be looking for a three-peat in her senior year, said the Raiders are motivated to keep the streak alive.

“We are very competitive girls, and we definitely don’t want to lose,” said McGeoghegan. “We love our gold medals.”

Resumé

In the 2024 campaign, the Raiders completed regular-season and playoff action with a record of 9-0 while outscoring their opposition 117-3.

“Our hitting is definitely one of our biggest strengths,” said McGeoghegan, who is playing this summer with the P.E.I. Whitecaps’ 17-under squad and the 2025 Canada Summer Games’ softball training team. “We have hitters who can smash them or put them in the right spot when we need it, and we have some extremely fast runners who can steal bases for us.”

Post-season numbers

The Raiders won all three of their playoff games 15-0 with Celia Conohan pitching a shutout in the semifinal against the Bluefield Bobcats. MacKenzie Sheehan did not allow a run in a quarter-final victory over the Kinkora Blazers.

What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is the Raiders’ roster features only Grades 10 and 11 players.

“A lot of the credit goes to the club teams and provincial teams that they play with.” – Joe Broderick

“A lot of the credit goes to the club teams and provincial teams that they play with,” Raiders head coach Joe Broderick told SaltWire in an interview after the gold-medal contest. “We don’t have to do a lot of coaching because they are just that good.”

Broderick, who added Charlottetown Rural features strong depth and players who can play all-round games, said despite the Raiders’ dominance, the team never took any opponent lightly.

“The season we’ve had, we didn’t play many close games, and you can fall into a lull of playing three or four innings over and over, so you have to come ready to play, not give the other team an opening right off the bat and they did that,” said Broderick.
