Summerside Intermediate defeats East Wiltshire in boys’ gold-medal match at KISH

KENSINGTON – The Summerside Intermediate School (SIS) Owls executed their game plan to perfection in the biggest match of the season.

The Summerside Intermediate School Owls’ Ben MacDougall jumps in the air to attempt a spike during the gold-medal match of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Intermediate AA Boys Volleyball League provincial championship tournament at Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School on Thursday night. MacDougall’s teammates Connor Keough, 7, and Justin Caron, 11, follow the play. The Owls defeated the East Wiltshire Warriors 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-18).

The Owls defeated the East Wiltshire Warriors 3-0 on Thursday night to win the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Intermediate AA Boys Volleyball League championship for the third year in a row. Scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-18.

“The boys had a great season,” said Owls head coach Dale MacDougall. “To go undefeated (in league play) and come into the provincials and win three straight (in the gold-medal match) is a pretty sweet feeling.”

Quick lead

Before a noisy crowd at Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School (KISH), the Owls, who were 8-0 (won-lost) in the regular season, jumped out to a 12-4 lead en route to winning the opening set 25-19.

The Owls won the second set 25-19, and then came from behind to complete the sweep 25-18.

“The boys played their hearts out,” assessed MacDougall. “We had great serve reception, we served well, we didn’t let too many balls hit the floor and they came ready and prepared to play. I’ve been preaching all year to leave nothing out there.”

Key serving

Although down two sets, the Warriors refused to go quietly. East Wiltshire built a 10-4 lead in the third set, but the momentum changed when the Owls’ Connor Keough recorded multiple serving points to tie the score 12-12.

“That great serve rotation by Connor Keough got us back in the game,” acknowledged MacDougall. “That’s all it takes. It is a game of momentum.”

“The boys had a great season. To go undefeated (in league play) and come into the provincials and win three straight (in the gold-medal match) is a pretty sweet feeling.”Owls head coach Dale MacDougall

MVP

SIS Grade 9 middle player Ben MacDougall, who was dominant hitting the ball in the final, was named the most valuable player of the provincial championship, and teammate Justin Caron received all-star honours.

“Our setter Justin Caron had a fabulous season, and what can I say about Ben?,” said Coach MacDougall. “He’s our MVP, our go-to guy. But in order for that to happen, we have to have good serve reception from everybody on the team so Justin can make the plays. It was a total team effort.”

Stonepark girls extend undefeated streak in PEISAA intermediate AA league play to three years

KENSINGTON – The Stonepark Tigers capped off another perfect season in convincing fashion.

Stonepark Tigers middle player Evie Thompson makes a play during the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Intermediate AA Girls Volleyball League championship match at Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School on Thursday evening. The Tigers won the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 25-19), and Thompson was named the provincial championship tournament’s most valuable player.

The Tigers swept the Queen Charlotte Coyotes in three straight sets to win the Charlottetown school’s third straight P.E.I. School Athletic Association Intermediate AA Girls Volleyball League championship on Thursday evening.

“We played very well both offensively and defensively,” analyzed Tigers head coach Larry Young.

Impressive run

Even more impressive is that the Tigers are undefeated in PEISAA league play the last three years. Grade 9s Evie Thompson, Devon Lawlor and Sophie Hayes have been members of all three of those Stonepark teams

“They are a very, very good team, and they play well as a team,” said Young. “They are used to stiff competition.

“We’ve been off-Island twice at the Dal and the Mount Saint Vincent tournaments. They have seen lots of stiff competition, both on and off the Island.

“We were in five tournaments all year, and that helps making a strong team.”

Thompson, who plays the middle, was named the provincial championship tournament’s most valuable player, and Lawlor was selected an all-star. Lawlor is a setter.

Opening set

At Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School, the Tigers prevailed in a tight opening set in the gold-medal match 25-23. Stonepark dominated the second set 25-7, and then closed out the match by winning 25-19 in Set 3.

“They are a very, very good team, and they play well as a team. They are used to stiff competition. We’ve been off-Island twice at Dal and the Mount Saint Vincent tournament. They have seen lots of stiff competition, both on and off the Island. We were in five tournaments all year, and that helps making a strong team.”Stonepark head coach Larry Young

“I was afraid Queen Charlotte could come back at any time,” said Young. “We were up, and then they fought back.

“It was closer than the scores may have indicated.”

Team effort

Young was pleased with how all the Tigers stepped up in their run to the provincial title.

“The whole team supported everybody,” said Young. “It was a very good team effort, and we were very fortunate to win.”
