Kinkora, Athena win PEISAA Intermediate A title
Reeves, Pineau named tournament MVPs
SUMMERSIDE – Kinkora and Athena are the 2016 P.E.I. School Athletic Association intermediate A volleyball champions.

Both teams pulled out close wins in their respective gold-medal games on Friday.
At Souris Regional High School, Kinkora trailed 2-1 in sets and overcame a five-point deficit in the deciding set to pull out a five-set thriller over defending-champion Francois Buote in a final that had fans of both teams on their feet.
Scores were 23-25, 25-18, 24-26, 26-24, 15-13.
Maura Duffy’s setting and provincial championship tournament most valuable player Faith Reeves led Kinkora in the final.
In the semifinals, also held Friday, Kinkora defeated Montague in three close sets – 25-22, 25-21, 27-25 – while Francois Buote got by École sur Mer 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-18).
In the bronze-medal match, some key sets from provincial championship tournament all-star Julie MacDonald and hits from Emma MacLeod led École sur Mer past Montague 3-1 (25-16, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20).
Boys
At Athena Consolidated School in Summerside, the host Hawks got by Belfast 3-2 in the gold-medal match to become new provincial champions. Scores in the match, which was close throughout, were 20-25, 25-55, 25-13, 18-25, 15-8.
In the semifinals, Athena defeated Montague 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 25-17, 2518), and Belfast topped Hernewood 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-9).
Montague claimed the bronze medal with a 3-0 win over Hernewood. Scores in the third-place match were 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.
Callum Pineau of Athena was recognized as the provincial championship tournament MVP.
