KENSINGTON, P.E.I. – Kensington Intermediate Senior High School will be the site of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association provincial gymnastics championship today.

More than 330 young athletes representing 27 schools will be competing in eight different age categories for the P.E.I. School Milk Foundation awards.

Today will be very busy with 146 registered pre-novice boys and girls from Grades 3 and 4 beginning at 9 a.m.

Defending pre-novice boys and pre-novice girls L.M. Montgomery Elementary will be there.

The afternoon will see 147 novice boys and girls from Grades 5 and 6 compete at 1 p.m. Defending novice team champions are the novice boys from West Kent Elementary and girls from Greenfield Elementary.

Later in the afternoon another 37 gymnasts in bantam girls and boys Grades 7 and 8 as well as intermediate girls and intermediate boys Grades 9 and10 hit the mats.

“We are very excited to be hosting our provincial event for the seventh years in a row at the Kensington Intermediate Senior High School. It’s such a beautiful facility, it can hold many spectators and the gym is very spectator friendly,” said gymnastics commissioner Paul Goguen. ”It looks like we are going to have great weather for our event, which means lots of gymnasts showing up and giving us the best our schools have to offer.”

More than 750 students took part in the zone championships. All four zones are sending the top-three teams and top-20 all-around gymnasts in each category.

Each gymnast will perform two vaults and one floor routine.
