Several Moose jaw high school wrestlers will be trying to win medals this weekend at provincials.

Kyle Yamniuk won a gold in his weight class at regionals last weekend in Prince Albert, and he’s had some experience against the top of the heap in Regina and Saskatoon.

In the regional competition, he would have seen some of the best of the best from outside the big cities, but he and the rest of the wrestlers who qualified from regionals will be facing the best from Saskatoon and Regina as well.

“I’ve seen most of them. A few from Saskatoon, a few from Regina,” Yamniuk said. “I don’t know all of them, obviously. But I know most of them. There’s going to be some good matches if I go up against the city champion from Saskatoon or the city champion from Regina. There’s going to be some tough competition.”

Miheret Cridland won second in the 56kg girls at regionals, and she talked about what she’s expecting this weekend.

“I just want to come in strong right away, not feeling defeated before I get onto my match,” she said. “I know that they’re training hard, so it’s going to be some pretty close matches all the way around.”

Connor Rowsell placed third in the 90kg boys.

“We’ve been training pretty hard and these past tournaments I’ve been placing fairly well, so that’s built up and allowed me to place in regionals,” Rowsell said. “I’m thinking I’ll be able to place top 4 (at provincials). The competition I have, I’ve seem them before and I’m hoping I can beat them.”

Grade 9 student Nigel Fang is going to his first provincials. He placed fourth in regionals in the 53kg weight class.

“For me, I just put on the top of my mind, I just do this sport for fun, I just do this sport for fun,” he said. “This sport is exciting, I love the sport and all the nerves aren’t there.”

These four and several other wrestlers will be at provincials, which takes place at Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon.

Provincials goes all day today and tomorrow.
