SOCCER PROVINCIALS: Halifax West girls repeat as Division 1 champions

The Halifax West Warriors captured their second straight School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 girls' soccer championship on Saturday at Mainland Commons.

Abby Melvin scored twice as the Halifax West Warriors edged the C.P. Allen Cheetahs 2-1 to defend their School Sports Nova Scotia Division 1 girls’ soccer championship on Saturday at Mainland North Common.

Reagan Wagg had the Cheetahs’ marker.


Wagg struck in the fourth minute for the Cheetahs, who carried the lead into the second half. Melvin tied the game in the 61st minute and put the Warriors ahead in the 68th minute.
The championship is the 12th in 20 years for the Warriors.


In the bronze medal game, Citadel blanked Riverview 2-0.


In the boys’ Division 1 final, Citadel blanked C.P. Allen 3-0 while Halifax West dropped the Woodlawn Panthers 5-1 in the bronze medal game.

At the Division 2 girls’ championship, Halifax Grammar School Gryphons downed the Island View Devils 6-2 to take the banner. West Kings topped Breton Education Centre 2-0 for the bronze medal.

Host Sacred Heart defeated Annapolis West Education Centre 3-1 to win the Division 3 boys’ championship. West Bedford blanked Springhill 5-0 for the bronze medal.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Cape Breton teams fall in Division 1, 2 semifinals

The gold medal hopes for three Cape Breton high school soccer teams came to an end in School Sport Nova Scotia Soccer Provincial Championship action on Friday.

In Division 1 Girls action in Bedford, the Riverview Ravens fell 5-0 to the Charles P. Allen (CPA) Cheetahs, the championship hosts. Riverview will play the Citadel Phoenix for the provincial bronze medal on Saturday at 10 a.m. CPA will advance to the final at 12:30 p.m. where they will face the Halifax West Warriors.

At the Breton Education Centre in New Waterford, the host Division 2 Boys BEC Bears dropped their semifinal on Friday afternoon 4-0 to the Sommet Cougars. BEC will play the Mosaique Mustangs for bronze at 10 a.m. Saturday. Sommet will get a shot at provincial Division 2 gold at 12 p.m., when they face the West Colchester Coyotes.

At the Division 2 Girls championships in Auburn, the BEC Bears were downed 3-1 by the Island View Devils on Friday. BEC will play the host West Kings Wolverines for the bronze medal on Saturday at 10 a.m. Island View advances to the gold medal game against the Halifax Grammar Gryphons at 12 p.m.

SYDNEY, N.S. — The Breton Education Centre Bears and Baddeck Academy Broncos will host School Sport Nova Scotia soccer provincial tournaments this week. 

The Bears will host the Division 2 boys’ tournament today and Saturday at MacKinnon Field in New Waterford.  

École Secondaire du Sommet of Halifax, École secondaire Mosaïque of Dartmouth and South Colchester Academy of Brookfield will also be in the tournament.  

BEC will open the tournament at noon today against Sommet, while Mosaïque and South Colchester will play at 2:30 p.m. 

The bronze medal game will be Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by the championship game at noon.  

Meanwhile, in Baddeck, the Broncos will host the Division 3 girls’ tournament at Stephen MacDermid Memorial Sports Field.  

Joining Baddeck Academy in the tournament will be Oxford, New Germany and Tatamagouche.  

New Germany and Oxford will play at 12 p.m. followed by Baddeck and Tatamagouche at 2:30 p.m.  

The bronze medal and championship games are slated for Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon respectively.  

In other provincial tournaments this week, Riverview High School will be in Bedford for the Division 1 girls’ event. The Ravens will open its championship hunt against the host Charles P. Allen at 2 p.m today. 

Halifax West and Citadel are also in the Division 1 tournament. 

In Division 2 girls’ action, BEC will travel to Auburn for their provincial tournament. The Bears will play Island View of Eastern Passage at 12 p.m. today. 

Halifax Grammar School and West Kings are also taking part in the event.  

The junior varsity girls’ provincial championships were held last weekend in Wolfville. Riverview claimed the silver medal at the tournament.
