Nearly 50-year-old record among those broken at School Sport Nova Scotia track and field provincial championships in Cape Breton

Jeremy Fraser · Multimedia journalist

SYDNEY – The old saying is records are made to be broken and that was the case last weekend at the School Sport Nova Scotia track and field provincial championships in Sydney.

Eight new records were set at the two-day event, held at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex, including a nearly 50-year-old record that now belongs to the mainland’s Cobequid Educational Centre.

The Truro-based school finished the boys’ 4×100-metre intermediate relay with a time of 44.95, breaking the previous record of 45.50 set by Sackville High School 48 years ago in 1976.

Meanwhile, Max Minihan of Riverview High School also set a new provincial record, one in which he originally set last year, in the boys’ intermediate discus throw (1.5 kg) with a throw of 44.65 metres.

Belle Pierrard of Whycocomagh set a new mark in the girls’ junior discus throw (0.75 kg) with a throw of 30.77 metres. The previous record was 30.10 metres set by Sara Scott in 2019.

In the boys’ senior 800-metre run, Silas Conlin-Morse of Horton High School of Wolfville posted a new record with a time of 1:54.29. The old record was set by Jake Gallagher at 1:54.47 in 2005.

Kaitlynne Mead of Pine Ridge Middle School of Kingston finished the girls’ junior 200-metre dash with a time of 26.25, breaking a 10-year-old record of 26.49 set by Taylor Mattinson in 2014.

In the boys’ senior 110-metre 36-inch hurdles, Luke Colwell of Park View Education Centre of Bridgewater set a record with a time of 14.79. Izaak Riis of Park View Education Centre (15.27) and Braden Doran of Cobequid Educational Centre (15.62) also bested the previous record of 15.65 set by Chandler Zinck-Marier in 2022. Colwell’s name will go down as the record holder.

Queen Clayton of Citadel High School of Halifax claimed the new record in the girls’ senior 100-metre 30-inch hurdles with a time of 14.41. Queen set the previous record last year with a time of 15.15 in 2023.

The final record set was in the boys’ intermediate 100-metre 33-inch hurdles with Declan O’Blenis of Amherst Regional High School setting the new feat with a time of 13.84. The old record was 14.29 set by Ryan Vanderwal.

The event marked the final track and field competition of the School Sport Nova Scotia season. The 2025 season will begin next May.
