The conclusion of the three-part Yukon Schools Mountain Bike Series was held on Tuesday at Mount McIntyre and was hosted by École Émilie Tremblay.

There were a record number of students, 41(including eight girls) who participated in the first instalment of the series held at Porter Creek Secondary School. The second week was held on the trails by Chadburn Lake and featured 31 riders and the final saw 33 mountain bikers.

The races followed the same format as the ones held in the spring by Trena Irving, the coach of U Kon Echelon. The springtime races saw between 20-23 riders.

“The races focus on getting kids out, having fun, riding trails and racing,” wrote Irving who is also the head coach for the Team Yukon cycling team.

Part of the reason for holding the Yukon Schools Mountain Bike Series is to hopefully attract more kids to the sport.

Irving wrote that she “wants to build up a race team that focuses on racing locally and representing the Yukon at races down south.”

The Yukon had strong results at this year’s Western Canada Summer Games. At the Games, Mara Roldan became the first female cyclists from the territory to medal.

Irving is hoping to have lots of athletes gain experience for the Canada Games in two years which will be held in Niagara Falls, Ont.

The race on Tuesday had athletes on either a long course or a short course.

It was a F.H. Collins sweep in the boys race on the long course. Noah Marnik completed it in 19 minutes, 33 seconds to win. James McCann was not far behind finishing in 19 minutes, 42 seconds. Isaac Meagher got the third spot.

Veronica Porter, also from F.H. won the girls race in 10 minutes, 42 seconds.

École Whitehorse Elementary School got the brooms out in the boys short track race. Jonah McConnall finished in eight minutes, 47 seconds. Aaron Schank came second and Heron Land Gillis came third.

Mattee Marchard was the fastest girl on the short course and only needed 11 minutes, 49 seconds to complete it.
