SUMMERSIDE – Prince County teams captured two P.E.I. School Athletic Association intermediate soccer championships on Monday.
The Summerside Intermediate School Owls outscored the Kensington Torchettes 4-2 in penalty kicks, after the teams failed to score a goal through regulation time and two five-minute overtime periods in the AA girls’ title game at Eric Johnston Field.
Meanwhile, at Three Oaks Senior High School’s Bus Depot pitch, the Hernewood Huskies shut out Souris 2-0 to take the intermediate A girls’ crown.
Three bronze-medal games were also played in Summerside on Monday. Summerside Intermediate topped Hernewood 4-0 in AA boys; Evangeline pulled out a 1-0 decision over M.E. Callaghan in A boys, and Morell topped Athena 3-0 in A girls.

SIS 1 Kensington 0 (penalty kicks)
Paige MacLean, Ardyn Hardy, Brooke Blanchard and Lana Gillis scored for the Owls in penalty kicks. Mya Moffatt and Amelia Murphy countered for the Torchettes, who had the closest call in overtime when Bri Hughes rang a shot off the post early in the second extra period.
Lauren Clark was the winning keeper.
The win capped an undefeated season for the Owls, who went 3-0-2 (won-lost-tied) in the regular season and shut out Queen Charlotte 3-0 in the semifinals.
Owls coach Sara Pauptit praised the commitment and desire of her team.
“This is the first team I’ve coached in a long time that was willing to come to practice, work hard and they wanted to learn,” said Stewart.
Kensington coach Blair Murphy added, “We were really good in the first half, hit a wall in the second half and in penalty kicks it’s anyone’s game.”
Murphy praised the Owls, and noted they were deserving of their victory.
