Ciara states:  “First sport has taught me about hard work, dedication, and perseverance.  Over the past ten years, I learned that participation is not enough.  How well I do in athletics and academics is dependent on my effort.  I have learned that I can become very successful in a short amount of time if I can stay determined and work hard towards a clear goal.  If I combine practice with hard work, I give myself an even greater chance of success.

Danielle Hanke of Neepawa Area Collegiate – holds an academic average of 97% while participating in soccer, volleyball and basketball.  She was co-captain of her soccer and basketball team and captain of her volleyball team.  Danielle was a member of both the graduating all-star basketball team and an All-Star at Basketball Provincials.  She is on her schools Honour Roll and also is President of the Student Council, part of the schools peer helpers and tutors, as well as the social Justice group called H.O.P.E. and band.  She coached Jr. High girls basketball and 5 and under for Neepawa United Soccer Association.

Danielle states:  “I truly believe in MHSAA’s slogan that “Athletics is the Other Half of Education”, and believe that the skills learned through sport can be just as important as the subjects taught in class. Playing sports teaches many important life lessons that will benefit the athletes for the rest of their lives, including

Teamwork, leadership, determination, work ethic, and respect among others.  These skills will benefit you far past high school, and will help as you transition into the “real world.”

Lana Mackic of Miles Macdonell Collegiate – participates in basketball, cross country, track, and badminton all while holding an academic average of 98%.  She was captain of her basketball team, recognized as the fourth best basketball player in the province, was athlete of the week, and received the Carl Ridd Award.  She is a member of the school’s student council and has helped coach Spring League Training and Coached at the Edge and Anishinabe basketball camps.

Lana states: “One of the most important lessons that sports teaches is time management.    Time management is a skill I will take with me to University.  Sport also helps teenagers become motivated and determined individuals.  I have learned that to reach a goal you need to persevere and work hard.”

Matthew Klassen of Glenboro School –  was Captain of both the volleyball and basketball team.  He was a provincial volleyball All-Star and Provincial Basketball MVP, was a graduating All-Star for both volleyball and basketball and the “A” male player of the year for basketball.  He maintains and academic average of 92% while also participating in track and field, badminton and baseball.  He is a member of the schools choir, drama production, and We Day/Youth in Philanthropy group and coached grade 7 and 8 Volleyball and basketball, as well as being a member of the student council and volunteering in the community.

Matthew  states: “Over my four years of participating in high school sport I have learned skills that will not only help me to succeed in sport, but also in life. I have experienced firsthand how hard work, dedication, discipline, and a positive attitude will lead you to success in anything you do.  Being a multi sport athlete, I also had to figure out very quickly how to be organized in order to excel in my athletics, academics, and community involvement.  The lifelong friendships I have developed with teammates, and the memories I have shared with them are priceless. My high school athletics experience has been truly invaluable to me and it has helped shape me into the person I am today.

Each of the four winners will receive a $1000.00 scholarship courtesy of Manitoba’s Credit Unions.
