JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS: Citadel Phoenix win boys and girls provincial championships in Coxheath and Wolfville
COXHEATH, N.S. – The Citadel Phoenix will be bringing a pair of School Sport Nova Scotia junior varsity basketball provincial championships back to the Halifax area.
Citadel claimed both the boys’ and girls’ provincial titles over the weekend in Coxheath and Wolfville respectively.
In the boys’ tournament at Riverview High School in Coxheath, Citadel downed the Horton Griffins 103-58 to capture the championship title. Statistics were not provided.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ tournament at Horton High School in Wolfville, the Phoenix downed the Charles P. Allen Cheetahs of Bedford 85-52 to win their title.
Riley Lirette led the way with 19 points, while Elizabeth McDonough had 14 points for the Phoenix.
Lauren Jonasson had 16 points and Josie Thurlow chipped in with 10 points for the Cheetahs.
In the boys’ tournament, the Riverview Ravens and Breton Education Centre Bears played on Sunday. Riverview lost the placement game 86-79 to the North Nova Gryphons of New Glasgow, while BEC was downed 85-74 by the Bay View Sharks of Upper Tantallon in the bronze medal semifinal game.
In the girls’ tournament, the Memorial Marauders and Glace Bay Panthers both played in the bronze medal semifinal games on Sunday. Horton beat Memorial 60-32 and Yarmouth edged Glace Bay 65-61.
